Over 300 plant species, almost exclusively herbaceous, adapted to live in particularly difficult climatic and natural conditions.
The Alpine Botanical Garden is located at the western end of Campo Imperatore, a short distance from the arrival point of the Gran Sasso cable car and close to the astronomical observatory at 2,117 meters above sea level.
Built starting in 1950, on the initiative of Vincenzo Rivera, it is the second highest alpine garden in Europe. It is an associated structure of the University of L’Aquila and is recognized as a site of regional interest.
It is the second highest in Europe after the Mont Blanc alpine botanical garden.
The garden also has a museum section, a research center and a specialized library within the university center of L’Aquila.
