A unique Experience filled with laughter, challenges and local prizes, in an atmosphere of celebration and Tradition.
A genuine, exciting celebration with teams climbing and sliding down a greased pole, amidst shouts and laughter, is a unique spectacle in rural Basilicata.

The Grease Pole Climbing (local dialect: “‘Nghianat d’u Pal d’a Cuccagna”) is an ancient recreational and folk tradition that takes place in Montescaglioso, a municipality in the province of Matera.
A classic version of the famous Palo della Cuccagna, a popular game widespread in many Italian regions (and in rural Europe), linked to arboreal rites of spring and fertility.

An eagerly awaited event combining tradition and fun in the square, with safety measures for participants, including a children’s version.
The game involves lowering a 10-15 meter or more tall pole planted vertically, lubricated with soap, grease, or other lubricants to make it extremely slippery.

Teams of 3-4 men climb the pole to win the flag at the top and local prizes, such as a basket of local produce.
A sturdy man at the base carries his teammates on his shoulders to help the agile one at the top. The community bets and cheers, creating tension; the first man to arrive wins, and the prizes are then shared.
