The history of Italian railways was born in this place
On 3 October 1839, the first railway in Italy was inaugurated in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. It was 7,411 meters long and connected Naples to Portici, on the same route as the Naples-Salerno line, which today runs alongside the Museum area. The route was covered in 11 minutes by two convoys designed by the engineer Armand Bayard de la Vingtrie, based on a prototype by the Englishman George Stephenson.
A guide will explain the history and characteristics of the locomotives and carriages, some of which can be visited.
