Located in Piazza Maggiore, Torre Accursi is also known as the Clock Tower. One of the most notable monuments in the square and in the center of Bologna open to the public: the value of the building in which it is included, the Clock Mechanism and some Unmissable Views make it an essential place to visit.
Its original name comes from Accursio, who was its owner. Having come from Florence to study law and later becoming an illustrious jurist, he wanted to build his own house: a very large building that included a school, with a portico facing the square, and a tower in the corner.
What still catches the eye today is the enormous mechanical clock, placed on the façade of the Tower in 1444. The sundial placed on the Arengo tower remained with the task of marking the daylight hours and above all midday, against which all the clocks were calibrated. other clocks, while from 1451 the new mechanism also began to mark the night.
To make room for the new clock, the old tower was raised a little and completed with a tower of modest size and consistency.
