Lizzano in Belvedere (Bo) – Excursion and trekking on the “Budiara – Monte Pizzo” ring

The “Budiara – Monte Pizzo” ring is a comfortable walk in the Corno alle Scale area. It is perfect for families or to spend a relaxing afternoon trekking.

It is possible to reach Budiara by car, a town located above the town of Vidiciatico, near Monte Pizzo. Once you have left the car at the end of the asphalt road, continue right towards Budiara, where you can observe the plain of asphodels, plants not native to our area but introduced at the end of the 19th century by the botanist Bertoloni.

Someone said they went to Greece to admire the flowering of asphodels but they are also present in the Belvedere and if we admire their flowering in Budiara it is thanks to Rodolfo Farneti: botanist born in Chiesina in 1859 and died in Vidiciatico in 1919, professor of plant pathology at the University of Pavia.

Asphodel is an extraordinary plant, tubers, roots and seeds are edible and perhaps, with the cultivation of asphodel, Farneti hoped to combat the poverty of the time; unfortunately cultivation was abandoned because it is edible, but not suitable for food use.

The leaves of the asphodel are long, narrow and pointed, gathered in a rosette around a bare stem one meter or more high which bears a spike of white flowers. The plant was sacred throughout the Greek and Roman areas, it was the “herb of heroes” and of the afterlife. It grew spontaneously and freely on graves so that the dead fed on its roots and forgot earthly life… it was “the grass of oblivion”. In the Victorian language of flowers, asphodel symbolizes eternal memory…

In Budiara the asphodel blooms more or less in June when the sky is brilliant and the sun drives the bees crazy, the only sound is the buzzing of the insects and the rustling of the wind. You will also find chestnut, hazel and beech trees.

Then follow the CAI 127 path up to Bocca delle Tese.
Here you can often find traces of the presence of both wild boars and wolves, their natural predators.
Towards the evening it is also possible to observe weasels, or see their tracks.

From Tese you can continue towards Monte Pizzo via the forest road or via route 127, which will take you to the Alpine church. Once you reach Monte Pizzo you can enjoy the fantastic panorama that can be admired from the top, then return towards Budiara via the forest road, completing the circular route.

From Monte Pizzo it is possible to carry out paragliding flights.

This route can also be done by Mountain Bike or E-bike. The Montagna Senzafreni Bike Park is also active in the area for enduro and freeriding.
