The famous Trevi Fountain is known to everyone, less known is the underground route of the underground archaeological area a few steps from the Trevi Fountain. Over nine meters deep, a journey back in time where it will be possible to touch the millenary stratification of Rome first hand.

The Vicus Caprarius, also known as the City of Water, is an Underground Archaeological Area located near the Trevi Fountain in Rome.
This fascinating site allows you to observe the archaeological evidence of the great events that have characterized the history of the city, from the creation of the Aqua Virgo to the fire of Nero, from the sack of Alaric to the siege of the Goths and reveals part of the complex network of ancient remains found under the Trevi district

The three sections of the Antiquarium contain the finds discovered during the excavation campaign: the precious coverings in polychrome marble, the refined Decorations (including the famous head of Alexander Helios), the so-called Spatheia, African amphorae for transporting oil, a wonderful “treasure” made up of over 800 coinstestify to the different phases of use and life of the structures brought to light.

Part of this intricate maze of ancient remains is the underground archaeological area of the Vicus Caprarius – the City of Water: the structures of an Domus from the imperial era, the Castellum Aquae of the Vergine Aqueduct and the evocative finds that came to light during the renovation works of the former Trevi Cinema.

Importance of Water
The term “City of Water” is due to the significant presence of water structures on the site. The Acqua Vergine aqueduct, built in the 1st century BC, was essential for Rome’s water supply. The site shows how water was managed and distributed in the ancient city

The area is open to the public and offers guided tours that allow visitors to explore the thousand-year stratification of Rome. You can observe the underground structures up close and better understand the history of the city through its archaeological remains
