The Museum is located in the San Sebastiano gate, one of the largest and best preserved of the Aurelian Walls. The museum itinerary retraces the history of the city’s fortifications: those of the royal and republican age and those of Aurelian (3rd century AD).

Visitors can admire Archaeological finds, Maps, Models and Reconstructions which help to understand the strategic and symbolic importance of the walls.
What to See
Porta San Sebastiano: This imposing gate is one of the main entrances to the Aurelian Walls and offers a panoramic view of the Roman countryside.
Permanent Exhibitions: The museum hosts a series of exhibitions that tell the story of the walls, from their origins to modern restorations.
Walks on the Walls: In some sections, it is possible to walk along the walls and admire the city from a unique perspective.

Along the route, the Honorian age walls (early 5th century AD) are preserved with slits for archers in niches, and large open arches on the opposite side towards the city, as well as the stairs inside some towers which were used to access the upper maneuvering rooms, which no longer exist.

The museum itinerary takes place on the first and second floors of the door, is divided into Ancient, Medieval and Modern sections and is made up of double-sided educational panels with texts in Italian and English, to which color drawings and photographs provide indispensable support.

History of the Walls of Rome
They were built in different phases starting from the 4th century BC. The most famous are the Aurelian Walls, built between 271 and 275 AD. by the emperor Aurelian to protect the city from barbarian invasions. These walls, approximately 19 kilometers long, surrounded the entire city and included numerous gates and watchtowers.
