A picturesque turquoise body of Water suitable for Swimming, with nature trails in the Simbruini Mountains Park and a small Beach, ideal for Hiking, Summer relaxation, Photography and Trekking.

The Laghetto di San Benedetto, a priceless natural treasure trove, a blend of colors and charm immersed in the “Le Prata” Natural Area of the Regional Natural Park Simbruini, near Subiaco (Rome).

It is the only remaining of the three artificial lakes, the “Simbruina Stagna” built by Emperor Nero for his hunting lodge.
The lake is fed by a picturesque waterfall on the Aniene River and is surrounded by lush river vegetation, creating an almost tropical atmosphere, so much so that it has been nicknamed the “Caribbean of Rome” for the turquoise color of its waters.

The lake is suitable for swimming and very popular in summer, but access may be limited during peak periods.

Admission Ticket
Only during the High Season (spring and summer) and on weekends, access is regulated: you must purchase an affordable ticket for a stay of 1.5 hours, to limit overcrowding and preserve the environment.

On weekdays and in the low season, access is generally free and less crowded.
Picnic Areas
Tables, benches, and barbecues. The picnic area is free (and therefore absolutely NOT bookable) but is relentlessly under the sun (it’s advisable to bring your own shade, especially in summer).
Another picnic area with shaded tables is about fifteen kilometers away, on the provincial road leading to Jenne, immediately after the last tunnel before the town (which is also very beautiful).
It can be reached from Subiaco by following the road to Jenne, passing the ruins of Nero’s Villa and taking a small road on the right that descends to the valley floor.

Shuttle: A free shuttle runs on weekends from the former paper mill parking lot.
What to see nearby
The Lake can be combined with a visit to the Benedictine Monasteries (Sacro Speco and Santa Scolastica), the Villa di Nerone, at the Borgia Fortress and the village of Subiaco, one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.”
