A place of deep peace, popular devotion and high-altitude meditation. The Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity of Vallepietra is an evocative place of worship and celebration, a devotion to the Trinity.

The Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity
One of the most evocative and mystical places of worship in Lazio, partly carved into the rock beneath the imposing wall of Colle della Tagliata, with a sheer cliff over 300 meters high that creates a Spectacular natural amphitheater.

Unique in Italy as it is dedicated exclusively to the Trinity, it attracts tens of thousands of pilgrims every year. Its origins likely date back to the 5th-6th century (perhaps linked to hermits or Eastern/Benedictine monks).

Popular Tradition and Miraculous Legend
A farmer saw his oxen falling into the ravine with the plow; descending, he found them unharmed and kneeling in adoration before a fresco of the Holy Trinity that had mysteriously appeared in a cave.
An angel brought food and caused a spring to gush forth, and the next day the Trinity itself appeared, blessing the mountain like Sinai.

The Icon
A Byzantine-style fresco depicting the Trinity “with three faces” (Trinità trifronte), a rare and striking representation: a single figure with three identical faces, bearded and crowned.

This type of iconography, called “Holy Face” or “Trinity of the Father”, was later prohibited by the Catholic Church in the 17th century, but has been preserved here due to strong popular devotion.
What to see
The ancient Grotto Chapel with the miraculous fresco.
Small side chapels (Crucifix, Saint Anne, Saint Joseph, Eucharistic Adoration).

A modern space for outdoor celebrations
Breathtaking views of the Simbrivio Valley and the surrounding mountains.

A small Museum with relics, votive offerings, vestments, and the history of the Sanctuary.

Main Feasts and Pilgrimages
– Feast of the Holy Trinity
One of the most important religious events with ancient roots and a deeply felt popular participation.

Every year, it brings together thousands of pilgrims, organized into traditional “companies” who reach the Sanctuary on foot, often after very long journeys begun days in advance.
They wear traditional clothing, carry banners, and sing ancient religious hymns along the way.

Traditionally it is celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost (between the end of May and the beginning of June), with a rich program of Masses, processions, and pilgrimages.
The main events are:
Saturday afternoon/evening: arrival of the groups and initial welcome
Saturday night: pilgrims’ vigil.
Sunday morning: solemn celebrations

Rite of the “Lament of the Old Maids”
One of the most moving moments with the traditional sacred chant.

A choir of young women sings an ancient lament, dedicated to the Holy Trinity; the chant is considered a form of collective prayer.
Procession and Veneration of the Icon of the Trinity
The Exit of the Icon
The sacred image of the Holy Trinity is displayed to the faithful.
– Apparition of the Holy Trinity
February 16 with the extraordinary winter opening of the Sanctuary for the Feast of the Apparition, with a pilgrimage and Masses.
The Sanctuary is open from May to October
Closed from November to April (except for special events such as the Feast of the Apparition in February).
Free admission, but during certain periods, reservations are required or there are safety restrictions (post-rockfall accidents).

How to participate
You can join an official company in your area, participate independently by driving to the Sanctuary parking lot, or hike one of the many hiking trails.
