An immersion in Renaissance humanism, with frescoes that rival those of Florence and a profound connection to Lombard history.

The Museo Civico Branda Castiglioni is a Renaissance jewel housed in the 15th-century Palazzo dei Castiglioni di Monteruzzo (also known as Palazzo Branda Castiglioni).

The museum celebrates the figure of Cardinal Branda Castiglioni (1350-1443), a humanist and patron of the arts who transformed Castiglione Olona into the “first ideal city”” of the Italian Renaissance, drawing inspiration from Leon Battista Alberti’s principles of beauty and harmony.

It houses frescoes, furnishings, and historical artifacts that recount the cardinal’s life and his role as a diplomat and cultural promoter, in a context that unites art, history, and spirituality.
It extends over two floors of the palace, with frescoed rooms and artifacts that tell the story of Branda and the village.

An important collection of Renaissance artworks and frescoes, including paintings by Masolino da Panicale, such as the “Hungarian Landscape”, created in memory of the city of Veszprém, of which the cardinal was count.

The Picture Gallery Room houses portraits of illustrious members of the Castiglioni family, including Branda Castiglioni himself.

In the Renaissance Loggetta, a cycle of frescoes depicting Illustrious Men and still lifes attributed to Lorenzo di Pietro, known as Vecchietta, is visible.
On the lower floor is the Cardinal’s Chapel, with frescoes depicting the Heavenly Jerusalem and the Eucharistic Mystery, attributed to Vecchietta (1437), enriched by carved stone corbels depicting angels.
