A historic event relived along its streets, which become the stage for numerous figures in period costume with a Historical Parade, the spectacular Barrel Race, the Hoop Race, and a final show.

The Palio dei Castelli is a historical reenactment in Renaissance costume with themes that vary from year to year, retracing the historical events of Castiglione and the ties of its Cardinal Branda Castiglioni, of the Castiglioni family, feudal owners of Castiglione Olona, with the rest of Italy and Europe (in particular, ties to the Holy Roman Emperor, Sigismund of Luxembourg).

The era commemorated, therefore, spans from the second half of the fourteenth century to the first half of the fifteenth century. Eight districts are involved, each representing an ancient settlement or farmhouse in Castiglione Olone.

During the Palio dei Castelli, the city’s eight districts compete in the famous “Barrel Race.” The winning district wins the coveted banner, the “Pallium,” a huge banner, different each year and painted by a local artist, representing the historical theme and the eight districts.

The Districts
The “Bottari” group are true athletes, mostly marathon runners, who train hard throughout the year for both the marathons and the Palio.
The eight Palio barrels weigh more than fifty kilograms and are awarded by lottery to each district during the Palio after the traditional weighing.

Pushing such heavy barrels along the steep, winding streets of the village is no easy feat, requiring skill and constant training.
The Palio takes place over three days spread over the first two weeks of July.

The Palio itself is preceded by a historical parade in which participants narrate the historical theme chosen for this edition.

After the awards ceremony, there is a light and fireworks show, preceded by a performance by a theater company.
The performers stage the fifteenth-century frescoes of the village: they are true living paintings.
