The Fossacaprara Festival, also known as the “Fossa Festival,” is a traditional event held every year in Fossacaprara, a hamlet of Casalmaggiore.
It’s definitely worth a visit to eat well, Play Traditional Games, and soak up the atmosphere of a small village.
An event with a rich program of traditional games, cultural events and typical gastronomy.
Among the games that stand out are Battichiodo, Palo del Salame, Trampoli, Ferri di Cavallo and above all the Palio di Fossacaprara or “Sburla la Roda”, a challenge between teams from the Fossa and Caprara districts who push round bales of hay while being pelted with flour.
“Sburla la Roda”
Sbürla la Rôda (or Sburla la Roda, in Cremonese dialect meaning “Push the Wheel“) is a traditional team and strength game typical of Fossacaprara.
The game takes place during the Festival (Sunday last weekend of August) in two key moments: the Italian Championship (afternoon, external teams) and the Palio di Fossacaprara (evening, local teams only).
On a triangular court, three players from the Fossa district push the hay bale clockwise, while three other players from the Caprara district push another hay bale counterclockwise. Everyone rotates at the buoy (wooden post) at the end of the course.
To increase the difficulty during the course, the spectators present pelt the players with flour

Typical Program
Activities take place Friday-Sunday evenings: Children’s Festival, Concerts (Baroque music, choirs, or chamber music), book presentations on local history, and falconry demonstrations in past editions.
