The Masterpiece of Lorenzo and Jacopo Salimbeni inside one of the artistic and spiritual gems of the city, famous for its extraordinary cycle of Gothic frescoes and its intimate atmosphere.

The Oratory of San Giovanni Battista is home to one of the most prestigious works of the city of Urbino: the large frescoes by Lorenzo and Jacopo Salimbeni from San Severino Marche, among the masterpieces of the “international gothic”.
A pictorial cycle completed in 1416 that has preserved all its original strength over the centuries.
The façade, not very showy, hides an interior of great artistic richness, so much so that some people from Urbino call it “a small Sistine Chapel”

Inside the Oratory of San Giovanni Battista it is possible to admire the style of the Salimbeni in the immense Crucifixion behind the high altar, in the Story of San Giovanni Battistawhich occupies the entire right wall and the left wall in the two paintings that are considered the first in chronological order: the Madonna of Humility and the Madonna with Child on the Throne.

The frescoes of the Salimbeni brothers are still today a real discovery for those who love the spectacle of Art, a shocking experience in one of the capitals of the Renaissance and represent a link between medieval and Renaissance art, anticipating in some ways the liveliness and narration that will characterize the art of Urbino in the following decades.
