It serves as a pedestrian connection between the historic center and the Mercatale parking lot. To be visited in all its splendor to appreciate Italian architectural ingenuity in all its forms.

The Rampa Elicoidale of Urbino is one of the most ingenious and fascinating works of Italian Renaissance architecture, built inside the Palazzo Ducale by order of Federico da Montefeltro.
Connects Piazza Mercatale to the Historic Center
At the foot of the Torricini of Palazzo Ducale, stands the semi-cylindrical tower inside which is the Spiral Ramp which, as an alternative to using the two elevators available, allows quick access to the city’s Historic Center from Piazza Marcatale.

Built in such a way as to offer a spectacular view of the internal courtyard of the building as you ascend, adding an element of surprise and wonder to the architectural experience and with the presence of some sculptures present along the way.

The ramp is accessible from Piazza della Repubblica through the portico of Corso Garibaldi, or by going up from the Piazza Borgo Mercatale car park towards the Teatro Sanzio.
You can walk along it or use the elevators available in the area.

Designed by the architectFrancesco di Giorgio Martini in the second half of the fifteenth century, the ramp was conceived to allow the duke to reach the ducal stables, the palace and the “Orto dell’Abbondanza” on horseback, or by cart, without having to dismount
The structure, also known as the “snail staircase”, develops with a helical shape and represents an example of extraordinary functional and symbolic modernity: it allowed the duke not only to move easily between the different parts of the complex, but also to check the work of the stablemen without being seen
