Between Music and Folklore, on the occasion of the Patron Saint’s Day, which is celebrated between January 16th and 18th each year, the Rite of Lighting the Fòcara, a pyre about 25 meters high, built with over 100,000 bundles of vines, takes place.

The “Fòcara di Novoli” has achieved impressive national and international fame, thanks above all to the caliber of its organization.
Every year, on the feast of Sant’Antonio Abate, a ritual of ancient origins is celebrated that captivates both adults and children.

In his honor, a bonfire 25 meters high and 20 meters in diameter is built, commonly called the “fòcara.”
On the evening of January 16th, the eve of the feast, the tradition comes to life with the solemn procession of the Saint, the blessing of the animals, and the most anticipated moment: the spectacular lighting of the Fòcara built with over 100,000 bundles of vines.

The Fire will burn all night long and into the next day, accompanied by a rich program of concerts, Salento Folk Music, Fireworks displays, Art and Food and Wine, in a mix of the sacred and the profane that has its roots in ancient pagan rites linked to fire and earth.

On January 17th, the feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot, the celebrations come to a head with religious celebrations and cultural events. Finally, on January 18th, the celebrations come to a close.
The Fòcara di Novoli has been made for over three hundred years with bundles of vine shoots recovered from the pruning of the vineyards and is crafted by master “pignunai”, the only ones who know the technique that allows the entire structure to remain intact.

An effigy of the Saint is placed on top of the structure, which is then burned on the day of the lighting.
The bonfire is lit with a fireworks display, and once lit, its flame burns all night long, while the square is filled with thousands of people spending time to the rhythm of Salento folk music.

What is particularly fascinating, moreover, is the spectacle of the “fasciddre,” the characteristic sparks that, floating lightly in the air, create what is called “Rain of Fire.”
