A Folkloristic reenactment, but also a true act of faith that involves the entire community. The Procession is a spectacle that combines History, Art, and Religion.

The Historical Procession of Saint Rita and the Castelvetrano Nobility is one of the most evocative and well-attended historical reenactments in Sicily, an event that combines religious devotion, theatrical performance, and medieval tradition.

It takes place annually in Castelvetrano (province of Trapani), nestled in the heart of the Belice region, and celebrates the life of Saint Rita of Cascia, the “Saint of Impossible Causes”, with a parade in 15th-century period costumes.

The parades feature numerous participants in historical and symbolic costumes, representing the nobility and the local population, with a strong scenographic and ritual component.

The atmosphere is magical: the sound of bells, the music of the bands, the colors of the costumes, and the torchlight create a unique atmosphere, somewhere between mystical and festive.

The procession involves hundreds of participants, flag-wavers, musicians, and local nobles, transforming the historic center into a living stage of the Sicilian Renaissance.

It is divided into eight living tableaux that recall the stages of Saint Rita’s life, from childhood to death, with theatrical performances in eight squares in the historic center.

Preceded by Flag-wavers, Drummers, and Musicians (the “Aragonese Drummers” with drums and trumpets), the procession departs from the Santa Rita Staircase (Station Square) and concludes with devotional rites.

Approximately 300 participants in 15th- and 16th-century costumes; local nobility led by Prince Carlo d’Aragona Tagliavia and Princess Margherita Ventimiglia;

At the end, in front of the Church of Purgatory, the Prince will be proclaimed and a votive lamp will be offered to the Mayor at the statue of Saint Rita.
Sideshows include dances, folk tales, buffoons, and comedians.
This event takes place every year on the Third Sunday of May (the one before May 22nd, the liturgical feast of Saint Rita)
