Nature, Adventure, and Culture. The unique thrill of being close to the volcano’s “breath,” admiring lunar and panoramic landscapes, or entering “inside” the volcano. Trails, caves, and, in winter, ski slopes.

The Etna Park is located around Europe’s highest active volcano, Mount Etna (about 3,350 m), and covers 20 municipalities, including Nicolosi, Bronte, Zafferana Etnea, and Linguaglossa.
It is a protected natural area of extraordinary beauty, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its geological and cultural significance.

An ideal place for hiking, trekking, and outdoor activities, and for discovering the unique relationship between nature, the volcano, and ancient Sicilian communities
Visits are mainly via guided excursions, independent treks, and marked nature trails, which allow you to explore the extraordinary volcanic landscapes, forests, craters, and lava caves.

Activities are countless and vary depending on the season and volcanic activity.
Free Park Access
The park is freely accessible in the lower areas.
To ascend higher (summit area), above approximately 2,750 m, a guide is required for safety reasons.
Cable car, guides, and Jeep tours are available for a fee, with prices varying depending on the itinerary.
Some of the Park’s Trails, such as “the Donkey’s Back“, allow you to reach the permitted limit without a Guide.

Among the main attractions of Etna Park
– Central Crater and Summit Craters
The thrill of being close to the volcano’s “breath” is unique. It offers breathtaking views of eastern Sicily.
The main craters (Central with Voragine and Bocca Nuova, North-East Crater, and South-East Crater) are the beating heart of the volcano. Accompanied by expert guides, you can get up close to the active vents, admiring lunar landscapes and, during volcanic activity, spectacular lava fountains.

– Valle del Bove
An impressive Geological spectacle, with steep walls and solidified lava flows that tell the story of Etna’s eruptive history.
A huge volcanic depression on the eastern slope, 7 km long and 1 km deep, shaped by lava flows. It is visible from viewpoints such as the Serra La Nave viewpoint or via specific trails.
Take the “Schiena dell’Asino” trail for a spectacular view.

– Volcanic Caves
Entering “inside” the volcano, an experience that combines adventure and geological discovery.
Lava tunnels formed by the cooling of lava flows, such as the Grotta del Gelo (one of the most famous, with ice stalactites) or the Grotta dei Lamponi, can be explored with speleological guides.
Sturdy shoes and a flashlight are required; some caves require specific equipment.

– Trails and Nature
Experiences for all levels, from easy walks to challenging hikes, immersed in a landscape that ranges from lava deserts to lush forests.
Sartorius Mountains Trail
An easy trail that passes through extinct craters and birch forests (Betula aetnensis), with views of the Ionian coast.
Mount Vetore Trails
About 14 km long, it forms the portion of the Sentiero Italia trail that runs along Etna’s southern flank.
Schiena dell’Asino Trail
Intermediate-easy, it leads to panoramic views of the Valle del Bove.
Unique Flora
Admire the Sicilian soapwort (Saponaria sicula), Sicilian talus, and Etna broom, which create color contrasts with the black lava.

Practical tips for visiting
Best time: All year round, but spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) offer mild temperatures and vibrant colors.
In winter, Etna is snow-capped and suitable for skiing with slopes at Piano Provenzana (Etna North) and Rifugio Sapienza (Etna South).
Safety: Mount Etna is an active volcano; always check eruptive conditions before visiting.

The main access point to the Park is the Rifugio Sapienza, located on the southern slope of the volcano, in the territory of Nicolosi (Catania).
It is the most popular side for both day trips and visits to the craters, thanks to its ease of access and variety of trails.
It is also the starting point of the Etna Cable Car, which takes you up to 2,500 meters (Torre del Filosofo), from where jeeps and guided treks depart to the summit craters.
