Crazy moments of play where the Maiorchino Cheese wheels are thrown with the aim of reaching the Finish line in the fewest number of throws.

The Maiorchino Tournament (or Maiorchino Festival and Tournament) is a unique and ancient folk tradition of Novara di Sicilia recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

This is a Game of skill and chance that involves rolling (or “throwing”) wheels of Maiorchino cheese (a hard, aged pecorino cheese made from raw sheep’s and goat’s milk, weighing 10-18 kg) along a downhill city path.

The origins date back to the first three decades of the 17th century, when shepherds would test the quality of the cheese’s maturation by rolling it through the streets of the village.
Today it is a highly attended carnival event, with team competitions, betting, cheering, and a final awards ceremony.

How the game works
Route: About 2 km, from Via Duomo (or “cantuèa da chiazza”) to the finish line in Piano Don Michele (“a sarva du chièu don Michèri”), through narrow alleys and slopes.

The winner is the one who gets the furthest or with the fewest touches (depending on the edition).
Finally, a Maccheronata Dinner in the square with ragĂ¹, macaroni topped with grated Maiorchino cheese, bread, wine, and local products.

It is held during the Carnival period (from mid-January to February or March, depending on the calendar).
Competitions usually take place every Saturday and Sunday starting at 3:00 PM, with the final on a weekend (often the last weekend of Carnival).
