A place of great ethnographic and artistic value. A precious and detailed picture of daily life, religious traditions, crafts, and Sicilian popular culture.

The Sicilian Museum of Popular Art and Traditions is one of Sicily’s leading ethno-anthropological museums and is located in the former church of San Francesco di Paola, a building of significant historical and architectural value.

It houses a rich collection of traditional objects such as wooden sculptures, nativity scenes, Sicilian carts, costumes, ceramics, and much more, representing Sicilian popular culture from the 16th to the 20th century.

The museum’s primary goal is to restore and make accessible to the public treasures of traditional artistic craftsmanship and testimonies of Sicilian folk life, preserving them with ethno-anthropological rigor.

Approximately 430 artifacts, divided into 14 thematic sections, illustrate the rich Sicilian artisan tradition between the 16th and 20th centuries, such as:
– Sicilian carts, an iconic symbol of Sicily, finely decorated with sides and keys crafted with great artistic skill
– Opera dei Pupi posters
– Anthropomorphic ceramics from Caltagirone
– Devotional wooden sculptures (Madonnas, Baby Jesus, handcrafted nativity scenes, votive offerings)

– Traditional costumes and embroidery, including those of the ArbĂ«reshĂ« community
– Shepherds’ art, including wood and horn artifacts such as spoons, bowls, flasks, sticks, and collars for sheep and cattle
– Embroidery and lace, portraits, sacred and everyday objects

– Paintings on canvas featuring portraits of wealthy Sicilian families, female figures, and children.
The exhibits reveal the mastery of Sicilian artisans, as well as the colorful and intricate pieces that make up traditional Sicilian carts.

There is no shortage of posters for the Opera dei Pupi, those puppet shows that tell stories of knights and paladins, deeply rooted in the island’s popular culture.
