One of the most significant archaeological collections in Tuscany, among the remains of the Roman Amphitheater, which houses a vast collection of Etruscan and Roman finds from the city and its territory.

The Gaio Cilnio Mecenate National Archaeological Museum built on the remains of the Roman Amphitheater, visible on the ground floor and in the external Archaeological Area is named after the famous Arezzo patron who lived at the time of Emperor Augustus.

26 rooms distributed over two floors
On the ground floor are exhibited finds that retrace the history of Arezzo from the Etruscan era to the late ancient age. On the upper floor are the prehistoric section and thematic rooms dedicated to ceramics, bronzes, precious objects and numismatics

Among the most significant finds of the Etruscan section are the Jewels from the Poggio del Sole necropolis, an imposing polychrome pedimental decoration with combat scenes from Piazza San Jacopo (480 BC), a series of Portrait Heads and Votive Busts from Via della Società Operaia (II-I BC), as well as the finds from the grandiose Sanctuary of Castelsecco (decorative slabs, a Stone Altar and votive statuettes of swaddled children) and an Inscribed pebble for divination.

From the Necropolis of the territory come the Attic Amphora from Casalta with Pelops and Hippodamia, from the school of the painter of Meidias (420 – 410 BC) and the torso di Marciano, a funerary sculpture from the archaic Etruscan age.
The Roman section includes Mosaics, Bronzes, Sculptures, Inscriptions, Funerary Monuments, Portraits and Tombstones, including the precious one of Girl found in the “Puglia” area.

The museum also houses the richest collection in the world of Arezzo sealed earth vases, anciently called Arretina vasa, which, produced in Arezzo between the middle of the 1st century BC and the middle of the 1st century AD, made the city famous in ancient times.

On the first floor, in the Sala dei Preziosi you can admire the Male portrait in chrysography – gold on glass – (second half of the 3rd century AD), which is one of the rarest and most refined examples of this technique, while in the Sala della collezione Bacci the magnificent Attic krater with Amazonomachy is exhibited, a masterpiece by the ceramist Euphronios (510 – 500 BC).
