Dedicated to the First World War and to the figure of Ernest Hemingway, the famous American writer who served as an ambulance driver on the Italian front during the war. A bridge between historical memory and literary culture for an immersive and evocative experience

The Hemingway and the Great War Museum in Bassano del Grappa is housed on the ground floor of the fifteenth-century Villa Ca’ Erizzo, overlooking the Brenta River, a few minutes from the famous Ponte Vecchio designed by Palladio.
Unique in Italy for its ability to intertwine the history of the First World War with the figure of Ernest Hemingway, who in 1918 stayed in this villa as a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross

Five rooms that, through a film and exhibition panels full of photographs and testimonies, document the events of the First World War and Hemingway’s participation in the conflict, finally delving into the literary production of the Nobel Prize-winning writer.
58 large panels full of historical explanations, period photographs and testimonies, which illustrate the causes, the main events and the consequences of the Great War, with particular attention to the Veneto front and the Bassano del Grappa area.

Unique documentation on the participation of the United States in the conflict, in particular the role of the American Red Cross and volunteers like Hemingway. The presence of American aviators, led by Fiorello La Guardia, future mayor of New York, is also described.
Books, magazines, memorabilia and personal objects related to Hemingway, including his novels inspired by his war experience (“A Farewell to Arms” and “Across the River and Into the Trees”) and his youthful story “The Disappearance of Pickles McCarty”, set right in Ca’ Erizzo.

Introductory video of about half an hour that reconstructs the history of the conflict and Hemingway’s connection with the territory.
Focus on the highlights of the war: the war in the mountains, the battles of the Isonzo, the Strafexpedition, the conquest of Bainsizza, the martyrdom of Cesare Battisti, the tragedy of Mount Ortigara and the role of the “boys of ’99”
